This workshop will explore recent developments in Child Welfare Law practice, one of the newest areas of specialization for California State Bar members. We will also discuss new dependency legislation, recent case law and hot topics related to the representation of children and families in the Sacramento County Juvenile Dependency Court. Amina Merritt, Esq. has been a juvenile dependency attorney in Sacramento County since 1999 and previously represented Los Angeles County DCFS (formerly DPSS) in civil litigation involving death or injury to children in custody or care. Topics will include “non-minor dependent” status, the new definition of “non-related extended family members” and other legislation related to educational outcomes for foster youth.
