How to Extend the Date of Trial
Parties may request an extension, or "continuance," of the date of trial on an affirmative showing of good cause, such as unavailability of an essential witness or party or a significant, unanticipated change in the status of the case.
Motions to continue a trial are not favored. It is usually best to request a continuance as early as possible after you become aware that it will be required. You should never depend on a continuance being granted, as a very real possibility exists that it may be denied, especially if there have already been several continuances in the case.
